Refurbishment of Hotel Alexandra. 2010-2011
Barcelona
Hotel Alexandra is a building in the centre of Barcelona completed in 1985. The project is part of the phased refurbishment programme that started in 2006. Phase 2 involves the refurbishment of five floors with bedrooms, the integration of two floors from the adjoining building and the incorporation of a new fitness and spa area.
Refurbishment of the existing floors has been carried out in the main building, where the 15 bedrooms located on each floor have been completely renovated, together with corridors and common areas. Bathrooms have been extended and partially integrated into the bedrooms. Also, the first and fifth floors of the adjoining building, in the corner of Rambla Catalunya with Mallorca street, have been added, facilitating the creation of 17 new bedrooms. Since these bedrooms are larger, the bathrooms are practically integrated into this typology. The fitness and spa area is also part of the extension and is situated in one of the original rooms of the house. The edifice, dated from the early 20th century, retains the original cement tiles on the floor and decorated ceilings, which have been restored wherever possible. Acoustic carpet has been laid on the corridor’s floor, while oak parquet covers the bedrooms’ floors. Lacquered wood and oak-laminated timber have also been used in the bedrooms’ fixed and integrated furniture, such as bedheads, wardrobes and tables.
