AEAT Refurbishment, Barcelona
I. Description
The proposal is based on an urban analysis of Via Augusta, where domestic-scale buildings and the balance between solid and void define the character of the surroundings. This idea informs the project, using the façade as both solar protection and a tool for scale adaptation, and reorganizing the core to balance existing voids with available buildable volume. The heterogeneous heights of the context require careful integration, addressed through three strategies: a variable façade pattern that blurs floor limits, a porous system with non-continuous glazing that constructs the overall perception from partial elements, and the use of ceramic materials and a folded geometry to relate the building to its surroundings. More than 95% of the existing structure is reused, significantly reducing embodied energy.
