Refurbishment Aragó 90
I. Overview
The building, sited in the corner between Aragó street and Viladomat street, is part of the Special Complex of Cerdà’s Growth Plan of Barcelona, and was built in 1950. A large extension was carried out in 1965, which resulted in the current building, comprising ground floor, mezzanine and five upper floors crowned with an attic.
II. Preservation
The refurbishment project transforms the former industrial premises into a residential building with 39 apartments and two retail units at street level. The design maximizes the façade perimeter in response to the corner site, ensuring optimal daylight and ventilation. Access is provided through the existing entrance, reimagined as a double-height lobby and gatehouse. The original street façade is fully preserved and restored, maintaining its historical texture within the urban context.

III. New courtyard
At the heart of the proposal lies a new roofed “L”-shaped atrium, which organizes circulation and filters natural light through all levels. Two staircases and two lifts are integrated into this space, linked by light metal bridges. The intervention recovers and exposes the original riveted steel beams and columns, celebrating the industrial character while integrating new structural elements within the courtyard.
